There are actually three ferries operating on the river between Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. Of course, before the ferries and for hundreds of years, there were all types of other vessels taking people from one side to the other. It was a challenge drawing that paddlewheel and all of those railings. I really like taking the ferry when I get a chance. More relaxing than dealing with tunnel traffic!</div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-tY7zsw4h_QtYfiVAuWXe29AypN-SNVKpiQyjxVXhXJVSTNCt0RbbpaLV-EVrXvstHdTsbcL8w1RugCAeacyLvN89EZ93LProGHRmf8t0uy-mzyoeNhvSOeMsKbGUU6gMR2aeT3xvKMxRKOfUO-SMOKdnviKvB2PUeHZ6usGABOW7SqpTRa6NTcBg-os/s750/IMG_1442.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="592" data-original-width="750" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-tY7zsw4h_QtYfiVAuWXe29AypN-SNVKpiQyjxVXhXJVSTNCt0RbbpaLV-EVrXvstHdTsbcL8w1RugCAeacyLvN89EZ93LProGHRmf8t0uy-mzyoeNhvSOeMsKbGUU6gMR2aeT3xvKMxRKOfUO-SMOKdnviKvB2PUeHZ6usGABOW7SqpTRa6NTcBg-os/w400-h316/IMG_1442.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-21485934291174540952023-09-24T22:15:00.001-04:002023-09-24T22:16:16.482-04:00American Box Turtle <p> I love to see turtles but I don't see them very often. This is an American Box Turtle that was crossing my yard a few days ago. I read that they can live to be 100 years old! Usually it's 25-30 years but that's pretty impressive too. I once saw a snapping turtle in the same place, much bigger and a little scarier. Apparently that one can really bite!</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVva1G5yueHt5CgkqbTfTlxSDjn4rOfrRUP5SK4BMny7h_lZoxTTfpXBkoQFSsSXt2-raBCF4_j8P0C4WYmcq0CmaWDljhTec1_XfPayx9HANouTzvhfL6uDQvI_JRUs1mXEBad8Y0mICdmRih_dKlX5N-x58bBvkoUUgyypxFKfSZsbq1Xc8s_wq9rlw/s4032/IMG_1498.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVva1G5yueHt5CgkqbTfTlxSDjn4rOfrRUP5SK4BMny7h_lZoxTTfpXBkoQFSsSXt2-raBCF4_j8P0C4WYmcq0CmaWDljhTec1_XfPayx9HANouTzvhfL6uDQvI_JRUs1mXEBad8Y0mICdmRih_dKlX5N-x58bBvkoUUgyypxFKfSZsbq1Xc8s_wq9rlw/w400-h300/IMG_1498.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">American Box Turtle</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTQF0bTaoaBqfQMhK9Jr1ikLHySAzdldTQ_C6ap9116my440UCVCX3pXLhMy3b1POiTYglkmeLfETL3rb0jbnRVO63kqAhtkW038B8b3vTUWcW-PsXmpAVMclTNOs2Q6TmfYuFYjUJWda0tRi3H4bzYycXvDtxTaTEA7FdAL8pVABcngAZQGGlOLBSG6k/s800/BoxTurtlesGouache%20(4).jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="647" data-original-width="800" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTQF0bTaoaBqfQMhK9Jr1ikLHySAzdldTQ_C6ap9116my440UCVCX3pXLhMy3b1POiTYglkmeLfETL3rb0jbnRVO63kqAhtkW038B8b3vTUWcW-PsXmpAVMclTNOs2Q6TmfYuFYjUJWda0tRi3H4bzYycXvDtxTaTEA7FdAL8pVABcngAZQGGlOLBSG6k/w400-h324/BoxTurtlesGouache%20(4).jpeg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Eastern Box Turtle<br />Painted in gouache a few years ago.</td></tr></tbody></table>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-68903171848046499122023-08-20T20:56:00.000-04:002023-08-20T20:56:23.824-04:00Norfolk Downtown Tunnel Solarplate Etching<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Why not draw a familiar site like this and add it to my Norfolk series? Since there are a lot of waterways in the area and lots of boats, we have quite a few tunnels. Six to be exact, with each place actually having two tunnels, one for each direction. This is called the Downtown Tunnel. It crosses the Elizabeth River between Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. The first tunnel was built in 1952 and the second in 1987.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyway, I had to take a photo while someone else was driving. She also designed and oversaw the production of many more works of glass. She wasn't publicly acknowledged at the time but historians have changed that after later finding letters about the work she did at the the company. Pickett U.S. Custom House - Solarplate Etching<p>The US Customs Service was established in 1789 and is the oldest federal agency. This customs house is located in downtown Norfolk, Va near the waterfront which makes sense since one of its purposes is to control carriers of imports and exports. The architecture is an example of the Classical Revival style. The construction was completed in 1858. Historians at the time expected it to be "one of the most imposing and showy buildings in the city." I'm sure they weren't disappointed! It underwent rehabilitation and restoration from 1996-1999 and still serves as a customs house. It certainly is an unusual building for the area.</p><p>Another addition to my Norfolk series of solarplate etchings. </p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHpK5rXZqHLDhqt3Hdhk8UlVARWvI-tkK46U1JFvGcTPdfmI0m5LtKsExVtROyh-yAEdEYHFdGua_WK0IUlqR73pHHJm0sUchDRw3HxqvryEpYwZQ2sPTLDfklXD8dBYTtBErUdiUi9GKfYJUNi6qoG0TJ-fSe2JCnwKIYKyC4dvMqc-eQodcdszZW/s3154/IMG_0822.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3154" data-original-width="2547" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHpK5rXZqHLDhqt3Hdhk8UlVARWvI-tkK46U1JFvGcTPdfmI0m5LtKsExVtROyh-yAEdEYHFdGua_WK0IUlqR73pHHJm0sUchDRw3HxqvryEpYwZQ2sPTLDfklXD8dBYTtBErUdiUi9GKfYJUNi6qoG0TJ-fSe2JCnwKIYKyC4dvMqc-eQodcdszZW/w323-h400/IMG_0822.jpeg" width="323" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-31508112733723684102023-01-18T22:16:00.006-05:002023-01-18T22:18:30.297-05:00Ocean View Fishing Pier - Solarplate Etching<p>The Ocean View Fishing Pier in Norfolk, Virginia is the longest free-standing fishing pier in North America at 1,690 feet. It was built on the site of the former Harrison's Pier which was a very popular fishing spot until it was destroyed by Tropical Storm Isabel in 2003. It was a good subject for my next solarplate etching of historic Norfolk places. Her love of art started as a child when she painted watercolors with her mother on camping and hiking trips. I really enjoyed its architecture and the grounds are superb! 120 acres of Ozark forest and 5 miles of trails. So lucky that it was a beautiful October day. The spider is a sculpture called "Maman" by a famous French artist Louise Bourgeois. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEupx4mdqtxgSx7iRZ2QepUcmEpGW1RL2C__Nnz0FZV1zVnPzWXDpwdNVqXX4DmCM73Xax0XscVz8rPaIqQ2K8LABwOlST_ERoMbchLAeJYssG8Ta1f4BCAHwAjjQItFA52-6U7PnTJFGUY2_2r1KGVThu0cOEE5PS55RKSnDBm2h74o1KYs_vtzDB/s4032/IMG_0226.JPG" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="400" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEupx4mdqtxgSx7iRZ2QepUcmEpGW1RL2C__Nnz0FZV1zVnPzWXDpwdNVqXX4DmCM73Xax0XscVz8rPaIqQ2K8LABwOlST_ERoMbchLAeJYssG8Ta1f4BCAHwAjjQItFA52-6U7PnTJFGUY2_2r1KGVThu0cOEE5PS55RKSnDBm2h74o1KYs_vtzDB/s400/IMG_0226.JPG"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnRvriTSvv15WLNyJqz1JHVAZ9_Ku2sfWSixN7CBVoK4HzJ_KOOn0DrcTEZi7nlJYkrWHIrmLhJy6kwSbAdhbyoS1T2_I33gRSF6fWstZxlrqP6iu5EAppQt-9DL6lBk1YQGLmSFxZr2QUCkVOcC3MDeLhapa8yZQplwPfqPizGtM1sOrytI5pE1Co/s4032/IMG_0230.JPG" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="400" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnRvriTSvv15WLNyJqz1JHVAZ9_Ku2sfWSixN7CBVoK4HzJ_KOOn0DrcTEZi7nlJYkrWHIrmLhJy6kwSbAdhbyoS1T2_I33gRSF6fWstZxlrqP6iu5EAppQt-9DL6lBk1YQGLmSFxZr2QUCkVOcC3MDeLhapa8yZQplwPfqPizGtM1sOrytI5pE1Co/s400/IMG_0230.JPG"/></a></div>

The cemetery is an historic municipal one that was officially established in 1853. It's listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The tombstones have much Victorian funerary including shells, lambs, wreathes, lilies and anchors. And there are quite a few angels, this one being my favorite. I drew it on glass and then exposed it in the sun on a solarplate that is light sensitive. It needs to be near noon and a bright sunny day. (Panic can set in when clouds suddenly appear!) It only took 30 seconds! That's so amazing to me. Then after a couple of other steps, I was ready to make some handmade prints from the exposed plates. <br /><br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKncCFuDdpBXVH4M4GrqybMijkHwkQVIvxUkjnX8i79A3W4BLma3IIn5DRiqAB87d2vpGiNuN7CFFu3h5INVdrwN5PxvIjPTUQZLl6zdYkQhFhWHE20L8VZv28j0pGvHOCasZIS-8PZ2EjD4LFS9YxMewO7cVdelZfJuwwBqAgZKmgMGk8dFOZ4eqS/s1076/ElmwoodCemetaryNorfolk2022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1076" data-original-width="850" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKncCFuDdpBXVH4M4GrqybMijkHwkQVIvxUkjnX8i79A3W4BLma3IIn5DRiqAB87d2vpGiNuN7CFFu3h5INVdrwN5PxvIjPTUQZLl6zdYkQhFhWHE20L8VZv28j0pGvHOCasZIS-8PZ2EjD4LFS9YxMewO7cVdelZfJuwwBqAgZKmgMGk8dFOZ4eqS/w316-h400/ElmwoodCemetaryNorfolk2022.jpg" width="316" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elmwood Cemetery Angel</td></tr></tbody></table><br /> </p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-91016592939857358522022-06-30T21:33:00.003-04:002022-06-30T21:35:10.282-04:00Sweethaven Lavender Farm<p>To my surprise I discovered that there is a lavender farm in Williamsburg, Virginia so I had to pay a visit since I was there for the day anyway. It was a tricky weather day but it stopped raining just as I got there. I was given a basket and some scissors and sent out into the field to gather my own bouquet. How pleasant, I thought! After I finished, I went to the shop where various lavender products are produced and sold. It brought back memories of Provence....I'm sure that's what most people think about when it comes to lavender!</p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQPhpeZMBa1RwH8LFFUrEdbot5yrjXzsvcO2VkSjhyxUSiFjh-cL0TT6mgBTCtXG2vdAZjmcJ1TCu4QEJqcs-_Dsuz71CywMdU5nkIBFpp5iPu8O4bHM81JMeX3Mhx6i6bsU7blbVvbyGVIhjHKC-R18feWN0pHqNyToAaEar4THsGiEuv32pj-2pF/s2282/IMG_9845.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2282" data-original-width="1956" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQPhpeZMBa1RwH8LFFUrEdbot5yrjXzsvcO2VkSjhyxUSiFjh-cL0TT6mgBTCtXG2vdAZjmcJ1TCu4QEJqcs-_Dsuz71CywMdU5nkIBFpp5iPu8O4bHM81JMeX3Mhx6i6bsU7blbVvbyGVIhjHKC-R18feWN0pHqNyToAaEar4THsGiEuv32pj-2pF/w343-h400/IMG_9845.JPG" width="343" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUDJZKFGTRisPsfFD5I-qd7m2Z0a991sbB-F6OPZFfkpKTiywmkXXyCjSSiT8LjZP-fQS4DI0wJ8dIdI5fVB-U-XCQCtGWeFzSJb5VuLZgqpowKAPvKIifHCNRarzqHDPyhBuucOcm7W_Um2bgXxsyK2QPaGcyEsGVhJt4FkI_3foBErmhZyVtSKqV/s3615/IMG_9858.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3615" data-original-width="2502" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUDJZKFGTRisPsfFD5I-qd7m2Z0a991sbB-F6OPZFfkpKTiywmkXXyCjSSiT8LjZP-fQS4DI0wJ8dIdI5fVB-U-XCQCtGWeFzSJb5VuLZgqpowKAPvKIifHCNRarzqHDPyhBuucOcm7W_Um2bgXxsyK2QPaGcyEsGVhJt4FkI_3foBErmhZyVtSKqV/w276-h400/IMG_9858.JPG" width="276" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9uBCgoYKmI2tHdDBxFjO5qFA6DKD_QzU6I7ZvnynBWKrusSjP64WMOf0iF4gIG02ii5O1dmPIFUz5Y2_C14y1PXJazaHaG7dkSw0lj68JdIdBFOrqpoGQnmWQcyoI4lW9P2nkAuf2sjp-RkGScLbG8BO7x8px1VJQ5C27JhhfOQWhaCBOjPsRpL3V/s3176/IMG_9848.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2443" data-original-width="3176" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9uBCgoYKmI2tHdDBxFjO5qFA6DKD_QzU6I7ZvnynBWKrusSjP64WMOf0iF4gIG02ii5O1dmPIFUz5Y2_C14y1PXJazaHaG7dkSw0lj68JdIdBFOrqpoGQnmWQcyoI4lW9P2nkAuf2sjp-RkGScLbG8BO7x8px1VJQ5C27JhhfOQWhaCBOjPsRpL3V/w400-h308/IMG_9848.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhemhKORL3goH-JYHbapzMxHrr8Mep0M8DSeDtjqCV5NGSYsA5la9djpp9wVUpLR4jGseupZxx-UMlImgbfCzfNEfduARkQ8CBNlsUUfTaIUV64wbfdjt8OPlFbh6sQ1-eGLjszgy5D_E7DNNDwp0amEezu49wLvkag-II5AbuDChmKn8Fgs4vJ_9Ji/s4032/IMG_9855.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhemhKORL3goH-JYHbapzMxHrr8Mep0M8DSeDtjqCV5NGSYsA5la9djpp9wVUpLR4jGseupZxx-UMlImgbfCzfNEfduARkQ8CBNlsUUfTaIUV64wbfdjt8OPlFbh6sQ1-eGLjszgy5D_E7DNNDwp0amEezu49wLvkag-II5AbuDChmKn8Fgs4vJ_9Ji/w300-h400/IMG_9855.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><p><br /></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-87097830212683385572022-04-19T23:04:00.006-04:002022-04-19T23:08:11.013-04:00The Hermitage Museum and Gardens - Solarplate Etching<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">The Hermitage is an early 20th century Arts-and-Crafts estate located on the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia. I love all the details in a building like this...and there are a lot! I put some details from the inside of the church in the background using another piece of linoleum. The church opened up as a parish church in the 13th century and was elevated to cathedral status in 1803. That's what they say at the restaurant in Norfolk, Virginia that sports this funky sign! It's very famous for its ice cream and handmade waffle cones, made by hand on the original waffle machine, built in 1904. It was invented by Abe Doumar and was first used at his restaurant on Coney Island, New York. In 1907 he relocated it to Norfolk where it’s been ever since. Reading about the history and the food on their website certainly has made me hungry! It's true!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiT1jtzqMJtBRARgcWdlxNFDLvo5xgCKqBLndBUhklut6BlHpFeJ4A4xNGj4xpknPPQjyIMqH1UrMgKW7R5jmNo-VUe_3FL6YwMDTVoHQySvUjLtgDF7jWMTJrJWDcR5U1QZ5jx9xKg6gI3-oAKwXlbuztANTrxDwksk_UExrkaj82OV6c8-73NLuwn=s3405" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3405" data-original-width="2733" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiT1jtzqMJtBRARgcWdlxNFDLvo5xgCKqBLndBUhklut6BlHpFeJ4A4xNGj4xpknPPQjyIMqH1UrMgKW7R5jmNo-VUe_3FL6YwMDTVoHQySvUjLtgDF7jWMTJrJWDcR5U1QZ5jx9xKg6gI3-oAKwXlbuztANTrxDwksk_UExrkaj82OV6c8-73NLuwn=w321-h400" width="321" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-19857622041085691622022-01-10T21:31:00.001-05:002022-01-10T21:53:05.412-05:00A Sunny Gathering - Bird Linoleum Cut<p> I see goldfinches quite often in my yard and at my bird feeders so why not be inspired to make a new linocut of them? I like colored backgrounds with black on top. I carved two plates of linoleum and printed both with one first and the other on top. The final looks nice alongside the one I did of the seagulls which is the same size. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGk557OM7KUcq7FyMRxsDLeJ53ZVFFPND8qHsHQD7qii92MmOB5nqP5iBWct8vZemZPSZiT3Q2fFik9VS7FExU1BPym_4Av6RrDj07BOmVy3_rSd-TxdPmaqP7fB5x7tPXlEvrnJAG7ckLmwskZ2zjZBU69rgpOwVWiiq_wm4CgyovNjkVAFl9DdQO=s721" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="721" data-original-width="565" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGk557OM7KUcq7FyMRxsDLeJ53ZVFFPND8qHsHQD7qii92MmOB5nqP5iBWct8vZemZPSZiT3Q2fFik9VS7FExU1BPym_4Av6RrDj07BOmVy3_rSd-TxdPmaqP7fB5x7tPXlEvrnJAG7ckLmwskZ2zjZBU69rgpOwVWiiq_wm4CgyovNjkVAFl9DdQO=w314-h400" width="314" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-55590891922628489902021-11-11T23:49:00.004-05:002021-11-11T23:49:30.959-05:00Solarplate Etching of Epworth United Methodist Church, Norfolk, Va<p>I see this steeple every time I drive to my art studio. I really like the architecture of the church and especially the steeple. I was inspired to do my next solarplate etching of a local steeple! My building series is coming along with No. 9. The church has been at this site since 1896 and is located in the historic Freemason district in the heart of downtown Norfolk. In 1896, the Norfolk press declared that it was "the handsomest ecclesiastical structure south of New York." I would say that's quite a compliment!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgci2QNvFXIz7IQFrLFZ8tKOa0dxVtxpcKb2z0tIlhZs6Loit-pz473b7-xG4RwZA9a3da9QvFpizsx1xlyJ7b4bT7o59qil1RsJ7l_6d9Pn4lbdLkx4Q7w4ZMQSNoNxievO1HB_j2XpeU/s1010/16269099-1A98-4D60-968F-F47B0885C67B_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1010" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgci2QNvFXIz7IQFrLFZ8tKOa0dxVtxpcKb2z0tIlhZs6Loit-pz473b7-xG4RwZA9a3da9QvFpizsx1xlyJ7b4bT7o59qil1RsJ7l_6d9Pn4lbdLkx4Q7w4ZMQSNoNxievO1HB_j2XpeU/w316-h400/16269099-1A98-4D60-968F-F47B0885C67B_1_201_a.jpeg" width="316" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-66836937378634586002021-09-17T10:14:00.001-04:002021-09-17T10:14:55.501-04:00Casa Cortona Linocut<p>I saw this charming building in Italy a few years ago and thought it would be an interesting challenge to show all of the stonework and other details as a linocut. It's a small casual restaurant on Granby Street. I do like the name! I need to go by there soon and see if I can find out a little history of the building. There's a popular French bakery across the street and a few other interesting restaurants close by. In fact Granby Street is known as "restaurant row" and the street is in the very heart of the old waterfront city of Norfolk.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEo4MUrfiY6WPALiWJ32LGcXR3lPUUSVUOeUOfnr1XdZ_48FBy9eIYlzBbNKvFP2RCU1aFn9Hha5GzDmreUf2F2dKdnB9KSxqyh17rEqCRGV5dnlrW3oDuV1vxrzVlNU8TcXVZxT8bSj8/s700/0E336472-E50B-4EFC-BFDE-8D2AFB43DCC8_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="565" data-original-width="700" height="323" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEo4MUrfiY6WPALiWJ32LGcXR3lPUUSVUOeUOfnr1XdZ_48FBy9eIYlzBbNKvFP2RCU1aFn9Hha5GzDmreUf2F2dKdnB9KSxqyh17rEqCRGV5dnlrW3oDuV1vxrzVlNU8TcXVZxT8bSj8/w400-h323/0E336472-E50B-4EFC-BFDE-8D2AFB43DCC8_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-53937968225691441862021-07-15T15:28:00.001-04:002021-07-15T15:28:44.648-04:00Blooming Sanseveria<p>I was so surprised to see a bloom on my Sanseveria! It is at least 25 years old and hasn’t bloomed before now. It’s a houseplant that is considered very easy to grow in low light so it doesn’t always get the light attention that it needs. This one is near a window though. Maybe I should move it and see what happens! I was happy when they decided not to demolish and replace it. Good decision! It's an example of mid-century modern architecture and perhaps you can imagine that the roof forms are like flower petals in bloom. Hmm....give it some thought.</div><p></p></blockquote><p> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6UhUtoRyIgRGFYOICIUH7lQPE20zW0zNYdrEXS3soQ74U2A9pJwLHQaxtSDP-_S_C98GsJUGMGp5Ihuhs6ZWFEpY2hRY0zezNjD8AW4q6AOXZTQrQg_SAayhXnbQbXYcpbKo_n5U91E/s1000/A558372F-A21F-43D6-9BA3-5B7E65972937_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="806" data-original-width="1000" height="323" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6UhUtoRyIgRGFYOICIUH7lQPE20zW0zNYdrEXS3soQ74U2A9pJwLHQaxtSDP-_S_C98GsJUGMGp5Ihuhs6ZWFEpY2hRY0zezNjD8AW4q6AOXZTQrQg_SAayhXnbQbXYcpbKo_n5U91E/w400-h323/A558372F-A21F-43D6-9BA3-5B7E65972937_1_201_a.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p>Anne E Mayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11084727500878521886noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4724313549839027028.post-29285147809507771472021-05-05T22:19:00.000-04:002021-05-05T22:19:19.980-04:00Twilight Solarplate Etching<p>I thought that an apartment building in the evening would be just the thing to do to add a little color to a solarplate etching.
