The Wells Theater Solarplate

Since I like drawing buildings (and art friends were busy making suggestions!), I thought I'd draw and make a solarplate etching of another one that I like in Norfolk. This is the Wells Theater, home of the Virginia Stage Company, a professional theater company. It was built in 1912 (pretty old for us!) and is a great example of Beaux-Art neoclassic architecture. Many of America's leading performers appeared  here in its early days. It has quite a history which I won't got into here but I'm glad  that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
I learn all sorts of things when I do artwork!
When you draw something, you see more! Yikes, the details.
I drew it on glass and exposed it with light onto a light sensitive Solarplate. From the plate, I made a print.

Hollywood Cemetary - An old US Cemetary in Virginia

Last year I discovered Hollywood Cemetary in Richmond, Virginia. The name comes for the holly trees that dotted the landscape when it was first created. There are some famous people buried there - US Presidents and military generals....18,000 Confederate soldiers from the Civil War of the 1800's. It's great to visit for the history and for the quiet. To have a nice walk! Or be inspired to make more cemetary etchings!
Here are some photos. You can search the web for more info, if you like.

The d'Art Center is Moving!

This month the d'Art Center, where I have my studio, is moving to another space temporarily, for perhaps two years. It isn't perfect but it will be great to have a new home. Since April of last year (when the old building was damaged by an explosion), the artists have been scattered, working at various places or at their homes. Waiting for some sort of news! I've been getting ready for the move, packing supplies and painting some of the old furniture. This week I'll see my new studio space and arrange for the move. The city of Norfolk is trying to create an Arts District and this is where the building is located, so maybe the location will be a good move!
